Spartan win hat trick of titles
Spartan & Lakeside had a very successful weekend at the County bowls finals at Horsham winning 3 trophies.
There was a historic first victory in the Abergavenny Double fours competition. In the final Spartan played West Hoathly with the rain continuous throughout the course of the match.
The Spartan bowlers adapted better to the conditions and the rink of Ray Hodd,Alan Fleming,Trevor Logan & skip Rob Morphett stormed into an early 8-0 lead after 7 ends. The lead was extended to 14-3 with some excellent bowling. Although there opponents reduced the arrears the Spartan rink ran out 17-14 winners.
On the other rink the Spartan quartet of Steve Heitzman, Robert Harris,Lee Heitzman & skip Martin Heitzman made an encouraging start and opened up a 11-2 lead after 6 ends.
West Hoathly fought back to reduce the arrears to 12-16 before Spartans clinched the match with a 23-12 win.
The Champion of Champions result was Lee Dickson 21 and Nigel Hooper 10. Lee took an early lead and kept the gap throughout the match with some good first bowls which put Nigel under pressure.
Martin Heitzman lost 21-19 in the 4 wood singles to Jack Fairhall. It was a great game and it could of gone either way with the lead changing as the match progressed.
On Saturday Spartans (Keith Cheetham, Lee Dickson, Kenny Bolton and Trevor Logan) won the Senior Fours quite convincingly against Crablands BC. Whilst the green was challenging Spartans took an early lead and their opposition were unable to recover. The final score was 16-7 and Crablands conceded at 14 ends.
The winners of the Senior Fours and finalist in the Sussex Singles now travel to Leamington Spa to take part in the Bowls England Championships to compete against other counties for England titles.
